Welcome to the Door Peninsula Astronomical Society

Promoting the science and public education of astronomy, encouraging observational participation in astronomy, and providing outreach for the Leif Everson Observatory.
Located in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, DPAS is a local club and a chapter of the Astronomical
League.
We are a member of the
International Dark Sky Association as well as the Night Sky Network, a teaching arm of
the Astronomical Society of the Pacific.
We meet monthly on the first Tuesday of the month at the Ray and Ruthie Stonecipher
Astronomy Center. From Highway 42/57, turn east on Utah Street to Cove Road (stop sign) and turn left through the gate.
We operate and maintain the Leif Everson Observatory. This is equipped with a 14” Schmidt-Cassegrain Telescope on a state-of-the-art robotic mount, a weather station and a budding project in radio astronomy. On a portable mount is a 102mm refractor with a hydrogen alpha filter for studying details of activity on the sun.
The Star Garden at the observatory is used for viewing
the sky with unaided vision, binoculars and members’
telescopes. There are also binocular mounts set in concrete which allow people of various heights to share the same view.

Call 746-5896 to see if viewing is open!
We don’t always have ideal skies on scheduled viewing nights. Some nights when it’s not a scheduled viewing night the conditions happen to be favorable for viewing. We’re now set up to accommodate those situations.
• On scheduled viewing nights the gate will be open. If it is not good viewing, there will be a program at the Ray & Ruthie Stonecipher Astronomy Center.
• On other nights, one of us may have opened the gate and set up some viewing equipment. People can just call 746-5896 to see if the gate is open. If so, come out and share in the fun!
• Ray Stonecipher will be at the Ray & Ruthie Stonecipher Astronomy Center every Saturday morning. You are more than welcome to come out, look at items in the library at the Center, ask questions, or just chat. |

ALCON EXPO 2008 |
|
PizzaFiend writes "The annual Astronomical League conference is fast approaching, and it's not too late to sign up! The early registration date has passed, but for just a few dollars more you can still be included in the League's premier event on July 18-19, 2008 in Des Moines, Iowa. Please visit the ALConExpo 2008 website for details: http://www.alconexpo.com
Unfortunately the room allocation we had with the event venue, Marriott Hotels, are all taken, but we are hoping to work with other hotels in the downtown area to facilitate everyone who hasn't reserved a room. If you know of someone, or if you have not reserved your lodging, please email chairman@alconexpo.com and let me know your needs. It is critical we have this information this week to make arrangements with the other hotels.
We still have room for more vendors as well. If you know of someone who would like to promote their wares to the amateur astronomy community, please have them email our vendor representative, Doug Rudd atvendors@alconexpo.com
Hope to see you there!
Bryan Butcher
ALCON Chairman"

Adler Planetarium Field Trip October 18 |
|
PizzaFiend writes "DPAS members have been invited to a bus trip to the Adler Planetarium in Chicago on October 18 with NPMAS and NEWSTAR. The bus will cost roughly $40 per person and a gratuity is recommended. The cost will be finalized once the total number of seats is determined. This is clearly a situation where "the more, the merrier" applies.
Admission to Adler is $10, and shows which run every 20 to 40 minutes (depending on the show) cost $6.
Please email Susan Basten or click here if you're interested in going."
